Jordan: Beyond the Highlights
Most people come to Jordan for Petra and leave without understanding what is actually happening in the country. We come for both.
We visit Little Petra and the main archaeological site, staying in a family-owned hotel so your accommodation stays within the local community. We float in the Dead Sea, walk the incredibly preserved Roman streets of Jerash, and spend time in Wadi Rum, one of the most surreal deserts you’ll ever see. They don’t call it Mars on Earth for nothing.
But the experiences that stay with guests longest aren’t the landmarks. They’re the people.
As part of the work that we do as a social travel enterprise, we partner with an NGO focused on refugee self-reliance: giving communities tools to support themselves long-term rather than creating aid dependency. We want to be clear about what this is: not a refugee camp visit, which we consider extractive and disrespectful. Instead, we meet in a neutral, safe space with people who have chosen to share their stories. We share a meal prepared by refugees. Nobody performs their trauma for an audience. These are real conversations.
We also visit a women-run cooperative in rural Jordan. This is an organization built specifically because formal sources of income for women in the region are limited. We have lunch there, learn how to make crafts with them, and spend time in a space that exists because someone decided women’s economic independence was worth building an institution around.
That’s what ethical adventure travel looks like on the ground for us in Jordan.
